SQUAMISH INTRODUCTION

The town of Squamish is situated in a large delta which leads off into several valleys. The name Squamish comes from the Squamish native people and is actually pronounced Sko'mish which means 'Big Wind'. It is always windy in Squamish due to being at the head of Howe Sound.

Squamish is located midway between Whistler and Vancouver in the heart of Sea to Sky Country. Squamish is well known for world-class rock climbing and bouldering, extreme White water rafting and Windsurfing. Squamish was a busy logging town until recently with the decline of the forest industry, Squamish is located at the head of the on the Pacific Ocean . Squamish provides the Sea in Sea to Sky Country. Squamish boasts itself as the 'Outdoor recreation capitol of Canada '.

The community of Squamish (pop 16.000) is nestled on the Pacific Ocean sporting a sea port, log mill and log booming grounds. This industrial activity is very interesting to see. The booms are where the logs are sorted and stored on the water.

Because of it's vast trail systems, Squamish is one of the most popular destinations in North America for mountain biking. For the more leisurely ones Squamish is full of prime sightseeing activities. There are 1,000 year old cedar trees, bald eagles, trumpeter swans ( endangered ) and over 300 different species of birds in the Squamish estuary. When the 10,000 bald eagles are in Squamish, the 120,000 chum salmon are spawning.

Tourism has really taken off in Squamish in the 1990's, people from all over the world are finding out our secret places and endless wonders we enjoy here. With a 6 million dollar upgrade to the highway, Sea to Sky country is now preparing for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic winter games.

My name is Wang Yan’an, my English name is Frank. I was born at the foot of the Mountain Tai in 1980,I am lucky to be neighbors with Confucius. I like music, badminton, and ping-pang. My favorite quote is “ Opportunity seldom knocks twice”.

My name is Justin Farrell, I have a Chinese name “Jia si ping” . I am 18 years old and study philosophy religion at the University of Toronto . I enjoy hiking outdoors, chess, ping-pong and playing the guitar. My favorite quote is “if on the path you do not find your equal, it is best to travel alone” ■

I’m Wang Liying, I was born in the late 1970’ s and got a Master Degree of Law in 2005. I like reading, writing and singing. I’m not sporty, but am proud of having an experience of bicycling for 1500 kilometers through five provinces of South China . I am lucky to be here and to be with so many funny friends. This will certainly be another pride of mine!

I’m Emm a, I was born in 1987 and I have finished my first year at university. I love music, reading, writing and dancing (even when there is no music). I am very excited about this program and getting to have Linda as my counterpart. ■

My name is Zhao Miao, I was born in Beijing . After graduating from college I have worked in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Beijing Chaoyang District for 4 years. I like sports very much such soccer, basketball and badminton. My workplace is Stawamus Elementary School . I will give many kids the course of Chinese Culture and volleyball in next 2 months. I like this work and I will try my best in my job.

My name is Vincent Parent, I am from a small town near Montréal in Quebec . I graduated 3 years ago from high school that mean that I’m still young, 19 years old. After high school I studied science for a year then I went on an exchange program called Katimavik which is within Canada . Then I went back to school to study language which is now a passion for me. My first language is French, then I learned English, I also took 2 years on Spanish and a year on German. My goal into this program is to learn a much mandarin I can. My work placement is a new experience to me , so I look forward to learn a lot of their culture. ■

I am Guo Yangming, and Maggie is my English name. I come from LiaoNing Province . I am 26 years old. I work at Water Resource Bureau of Chaoyang District. As a volunteer, now I am working at the Women’s centre of Squamish, B.C , Canada . The job has two workplaces, office and second-hand store (to sell donated goods). Louise is the host of my family who is a doctor. She is very kind. We live on the hillside and live together happily.

My name is Brooke E. McConkey. I am 20 years of age.I am from St. Stephen , New Brunswick (the southernmost point of New Brunswick). My hobbies include swimming, skating, skiing, listening to music, walking, and relaxing. I joined Canada World Youth to learn more about diversity. Currently, I have been placed at an elementary school where I teach ar,t mark tests, help with spelling and reading, and assist in anyway I can. I am having a lot of fun here in Squamish , BC ! ■

My name is Tan Xiaokun, I was born in Ningxia Mosslem people's autonomous region. I now work in the Sunshine Community Correction Service Center of Chaoyang District, for me this is meaningful work. I studied law in university and I am interested in law, literature, and music. The activities within this exchange can help me to understand more concretely what is concerned in community correction work within Canada . I would also like to expand my visual field, gain some enriching experiences, and improve myself.

Dave:I have just finished my first year of a Sociology degree at the University of Ottawa and I'm taking a year off to reassess and see if that is really the direction I would like to take with regards to my education. I have been active in the sport of gymnastics since the age of 8 years old, both as a competitor and as a coach. My interests include swimming, reading, and just staying active in whatever ways possible. Through this program I hope to develop some lasting friendships, and I hope to use this as a learning experience that will benefit me well into the future. ■

My name is Hei Weina. My hometown is Beijing city, the capital of China . I graduated from university three years ago, and I work in the government of Chaoyang district. I am interested in playing piano, swimming, reading and traveling. I am excited to meet so many Canadian friends, and I love the unique ways in which different cultures come together and learn about one another. I hope to finish the program in order to increase understanding and friendship between the Chinese and Canadian.

Hello, I’m Pamela and my hometown is Montreal , Quebec and I have just graduated from high school. I really enjoy spending some time with friends, doing any kinds of sports, and mostly having a great time. I’m really happy that I am part of this program since I know it will give me a great deal of life experiences. I have yet so much to learn from the Chinese culture and I’m really looking forward to get the most that I can out of the program by enjoying every second of this amazing adventure! ■

This is Sun Xin (Mike) and Niel, they are counter parts in the CAN-PRC international exchange program (CWY-CYCIPE)! Sun Xin is an official in the Government of Chaoyang District ( Beijing ), and Niel is a Canadian student. These two guys are from different countries, but now, they are together in Canada . This program has provided them a unique opportunity to learn about each other’s culture. In the adventure capital of Canada , Squamish BC , they have begun to forge a sea to sky memory that will last a lifetime. At this moment, Sun Xin works in the Squamish Adventure Centre (Visit Centre), and Niel works in the Hotspot (Volunteer Centre). They will do their best to gain the glory of a volunteer career! ■

We are a couple of fun and engergetic girls.We get along very well and are becoming very good friends. Whitney likes many kinds of sports and Brianne likes to read and write. Both of us love to get together with all of our friends whenever we can. ■

My name is aozhixiao, I am also often called “ow”. I was born in JiangXi Province and now work at the Youth Volunteer Association of ChaoYang District, BeiJing . Nothing could be more happy than we have taken part into the China-Canada Youth exchange program. I love all that about Squamish, the host familiy, counterparts, and so on.

My name is Raven. Mitchell. I am 19 years old, from Peterborough , Ontario . I am studying to become a police officer, although I am not sure if that is the career I really want. I am very excited about learning more about Chinese language, culture and the people who live there. I am really enjoying Squamish, and I get along really well with my counter-part.
